The car will enter production sometime in 2018

Just yesterday, German auto giant Audi announced that, come September, it would unveil a new all-electric SUV concept car, the e-tron quattro, at the 2015 International Motor Show in Frankfurt.

The car manufacturer also released a few images, just so we can get an idea of what the ride will look like. Don't fret, you can find these teaser pics in the gallery below .

The car will come with three electric motors

Audi describes its e-tron quattro concept car as having a total of three electric motors, of which one fitted onto the front axle and the others on the rear.

Thanks to a lithium-ion battery, the SUV will have a driving range of about 310 miles (nearly 500 kilometers), comparable to that of rival Tesla's Model S, designed to drive for up to 270 miles (around 435 kilometers) on a single charge.

Audi credits a reduced drag coefficient value, i.e. 0.25, for the fairly impressive driving range. In turn, the reduced drag coefficient comes down to movable aerodynamic elements at the front, the rear and on the side, all intended to improve air flow.

Better airflow and reduced drag can only translate into enhanced fuel efficiency and a better driving range, the German car manufacturer explains.

“Movable aerodynamic elements at the front, on the sides and at the rear improve the air flow around the car. The aerodynamically optimized underbody is completely closed,” it says.

“With a cd [coefficient of drag] value of 0.25, the car sets a new record in the SUV segment. This contributes considerably to the long range of more than 500 kilometers (310 miles).”

It'll be some time before the proper debut, though

Audi might have most of the details sorted out but, as it turns out, it will be a while before the all-electric SUV moves from being merely a concept ride to making its proper debut.

For the time being, the car maker can't make us any promises. All the same, it hopes that, should all go well, the ride will enter production sometime in 2018.
