A new stable version of the Audacious open-source and cross-platform audio playback application has been announced for both GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows platforms, version 3.8.

Audacious 3.8 has been in development since early August when the first Beta milestone was announced, and it received a second Beta build in early September. But now the wait is finally over, and you can get your hands on the final release, which brings tons of new features and improvements.

Probably the most important change implemented in Audacious 3.8 is the ability to run multiple instances of the application, something that wasn't possible with any of the previous releases except the Beta versions of the 3.8 milestone. Best of all, each running Audacious instance remembers its own configuration.

"With this version, it is finally possible to run multiple instances of Audacious (#635). Instances are numbered and can be started with audacious -2, audacious -3, and so on; once running, they can be controlled with audtool -2 < command >, audtool -3 < command >, and so on," said the devs in the release announcement.

Seamless cuesheet support, startup notifications

Among other interesting features of the Audacious 3.8, we can mention the ability to enable or disable stream recording, as well as effects and visualizations through the audtool commands, seamless cuesheet support with better prevention of duplicates, and support for the startup notification protocol from freedesktop.org.

It is now possible to read and write album artist metadata for FLAC and OGG Vorbis files, as well as add folders from multiple URI protocols, such as FTP or MTP via GIO, there's a new option that lets you display the time as MMM:SS instead of H:MM:SS, and the libcue 2.0 library or later versions are now supported.

Last but not least, Audacious 3.8 ships with support for adding audio files if cuesheet support is now enabled, the ability to display artists that have only a single PERFORMER line, many improvements to the Qt interface, and support for applying equalization and audio effects to a stream recording.
