GitHub announced the release of the Atom 1.26 open-source and cross-platform hackable text editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms with more improvements and bug fixes.

In Atom 1.26, the GitHub package received various improvements and new features, among which we can mention the ability of the ’s Git pane to display a read-only list of recent commits for quick reference, and support for storing your GitHub username and password credentials in the Git authentication dialog.

"Your credentials are saved securely in your operating system’s credential store so that they can be used for future Git operations," said Atom developer David Wilson. Atom 1.26 also brings improvements to the file system watcher, which will now automatically fallback to polling when the host OS can't watch for events.

If the detection fails, users will be able to force the event watching through polling by setting "File System Watcher" to "Polling," which may be required for remotely mounted drives. There's also a new, yet experimental file system watcher that might improve scalability and lower resource consumption when watching numerous directories.

Other than that, Atom 1.26 now lets you when you’re coding with Teletype to quickly open shared files from the host operating system. A full list with all the improvements and bug fixes added in this release can be found in the release notes.

Atom 1.27 enters beta with more GitHub package improvements

Atom 1.27, the next Atom version, entered beta testing phase, and it promises to bring more improvements to the GitHub package, including the ability to add multiple co-authors to commits, an easier method for creating a PR directly from the Git pane, and a more streamlined experienced for pulling and pushing branches via the status bar.

Also, the amend functionality is now available as an action in the recent commit list's context menu and an Undo button.
