The smartphone could arrive at the US carrier in June

Last year and the year before, Samsung released rugged Active variants of its flagship smartphones in the Galaxy S series, and it’s no surprise that the Korean smartphone maker will continue the strategy this year.

Last year’s Galaxy S7 Active and 2015’s Galaxy S6 Active variants arrived at US carrier AT&T in June, and SamMobile recently got word that an Active variant of the Galaxy S8 would make its way to the US carrier soon.

The Galaxy S8 Active heading to AT&T carries model number SM-G892A and is codenamed Cruiser, a suitable name for a rugged variant of a flagship smartphone. We expect the S8 Active to come with a more durable back panel, which would give a sturdier look to the otherwise delicate design of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Since it’s a rugged version, it will most likely have a 5.8-inch Infinity Display with 1440 x 2960 pixel resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 coating, just like the standard Galaxy S8.

IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certification for Galaxy S8 Active

In addition, it’s expected to feature IP68 certification against water and dust damages, with the added MIL-STD-810G military grade certification, making it suitable for situations that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ possibly couldn’t handle.

A rugged variant would certainly address the needs of customers who require a powerful smartphone that can withstand the occasional falls, more often than the standard variant. Battery capacity inside the rugged Galaxy S8 Active should reach at least 3,000mAh, but Samsung might provide more juice in this variant, as it did with its successors.

The Galaxy S8 Active will most likely be exclusive to AT&T, and arrive sometime in June, if not later. Since Samsung broke the tradition and announced the Galaxy S8 one month later than expected, the Galaxy S8 Active might arrive in July. Surely more information about the new smartphone will surface until the release, so make sure to check back soon.
