AT&T has just introduced a new service in the US, namely Wi-Fi calling. While the convenience of this facility is quite indisputable, the service is only available for LG G4 for now. However, AT&T should announce availability for other devices too in the near future.

One of the biggest carriers in the US, AT&T, has just announced Wi-Fi calling service for Android devices, several months after the feature was made available to iOS devices, back in October last year.

LG G4 smartphone owners will now be able to place calls as well as send and receive text messages over their Wi-Fi network as long as they install the required software update. The feature automatically detects when the phone is in an area with limited cellular signal but strong Wi-Fi signal.

Wi-Fi Calling is available in the US and some select international locations

It picks the best network for placing calls, either cellular or Wi-Fi. The feature can be used in the Domestic Coverage Area, which includes the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands, as well as many international regions, but the company hasn’t mentioned specifically which.

The feature works with an AT&T mobile number and a compatible device, so users won’t need to install new apps, just to upgrade the existing software on their phones.

Calls to domestic numbers are placed at no additional charge, but international calls are subject to international rates while text messages count the same as regular ones through the carrier network. One interesting thing is that calls placed between US numbers are free of charge, even if the users are overseas.

The company has mentioned that users who would like to benefit from this feature will also need to have a post-paid wireless account set-up for HD Voice, while pay-as-you-go customers will be able to place Wi-Fi calls or send texts through the network.

The LG G4 currently sells for a retail price of $358.99 unlocked at AT&T or $11.97 per month.
