After being stuck in development limbo for years, the Assassin's Creed movie is finally getting close to starting its actual filming progress. As such, an official image showcasing lead actor Michael Fassbender as main protagonist Callum Lynch is finally available.

The Assassin's Creed franchise has been around for many years now as Ubisoft has not only brought forth many different video games, but also short films, books, and other media properties.

One key project was the full-fledged movie the French publisher wanted based on its property. After quite a few years, the project is finally moving forward, and as previously announced, the lead role is played by Michael Fassbender, previously known as Magneto in the recent X-Men movies.

Here's the first look at Fassbender in his Assassin outfit

As you can see in the image above, via Yahoo Movies, Fassbender is going to be an assassin and plays two actual parts in the movie. In the present day he'll be Callum Lynch, a character created specifically for the film. He will also relive the memories of his ancestor, a 15th century Spanish assassin named Aguilar.

After gaining enough information as his ancestor, Lynch will go on to fight the evil Knights Templar. No other story details are available just yet, but more information should appear soon enough.

Hardcore fans of the games shouldn't read too much into the actual plot, as apparently Ubisoft and the production company want to keep the movie separate. The film will be a part of the wider Assassin's Creed universe, but it's unlikely that actual references will be made to existing entries in the video game saga.

Other important roles are played by Marion Cotillard (of the Dark Knight Rises or Inception fame), Michael Kenneth Williams (12 Years a Slave) and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight).

Shooting for the movie starts next week and the planned launch will take place on December 21, 2016.
