Ashes of the Singularity is a new real-time strategy from the famous Stardock publisher and developed by Oxide Games, who promise that their new RTS will be the biggest one ever made until now. The game has been released on Steam Early Access so that anyone can try it.

From the looks of it, Ashes of the Singularity is also breaking the ice with DirectX 12 and it's the first game that uses this new technology. Developers are not crowding at the door with games that make us of DirectX 12 mostly for one reason.

There aren't all that many video cards out there with support for DirectX 12. On the other hand, this is still in the development stages so it will take a while until it is released.

One of the ways that the developers of Ashes of the Singularity describe their game caught our eye. They are saying that this is now a battle; this is a war. They are trying to underline the fact that players will be able to control thousands of units on a map, which is something that's never been done before, or at least not on this scale.

Another interesting point that they are making is that AIs haven't been great for RTS games until now, but that's changing. The studio hopes to harness the power of multicore CPUs so that the AI will pose a much greater challenge.

Ashes of the Singularity is impressive

The game also supports DirectX 11, and it needs a 64-bit OS, but it will natively support DirectX 12 as well. Being the first is good and bad at the same time, but we'll have to see if everything that they are saying will be implemented properly.

“Players are building and controlling thousands, potentially tens of thousands of units, fighting on several fronts simultaneously. The war rages across an entire planet and is part of a greater war spread across the galaxy. To accomplish this new level of scale, the game makes use of a new type of 3D engine called Nitrous. Developed by Oxide Games, Nitrous was designed specifically for modern, multi-core hardware requiring a 64-bit OS and DirectX 11 as a minimum. It is also the first engine to natively support DirectX 12,” wrote Brad Wardell, President & CEO of Stardock.

The game is now available for purchase on Steam Early Access, and you can pick it up with a 20% discount that is scheduled to expire on November 3. You can also check the video and screenshot below for more details.
