14 DAY TRIAL // Ariana Grande didn’t need any more negative publicity because of rumors that she’s a nasty diva, but she got it either way, when surveillance footage of her licking donuts in a California shop emerged online. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she was also caught saying she hated Americans and America.
Oddly enough, Ariana is born and raised in the grand ol’ US of A, so her comment seemed completely out of place. It still earned her a serious whipping online, so she issued a statement to apologize.
Ariana is sorry, but not for licking other people’s donuts
The first statement was short and came from her publicist: she was “proud to be an American” and she was sorry for the video that seemed to suggest otherwise.
Apparently, this wasn’t enough to stop the backlash, so Ariana herself sent a statement to BuzzFeed, in which she elaborated a bit and tried to explain why she’d said that. She didn’t “hate” Americans, but she did hate the way they ate unhealthy foods without a second thought of what it was doing to their health.
So if you’re an American, rest easy: Ariana Grande doesn’t hate you. She only said she does because she’s worried about your health and weight, and because she wants the best for you.
Her full statement is available below. To be more convincing, it starts with the words “I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American,” before continuing to explain why she said those things.
Before you accuse Ariana of being a hypocrite for criticizing Americans for their love of donuts while ordering some for herself, she also makes it sound as if she had no intention of eating them: a friend placed the order, so it was all on him.
She does not, however, say a peep about the other thing that upset fans about the video, namely the fact that she and her new boyfriend dared each other to lick the donuts on display because they thought no one was watching.
Ariana Grande is rude
As you can see in the video below, Ariana and her boyfriend and 2 other friends, one boy and one girl, were waiting for the counter girl to return with their donut order.
Ariana is the one who prompts her boyfriend to try and lick one of the donuts on display, and then proceeds to put her tongue on one, as if to show him how it’s done. When he does it too, they all laugh like it’s the greatest thing ever.
Later in the video, they move to the other side of the counter and Ariana puts her tongue on a donut from another tray.
All those donuts, of course, were later sold to other people. Perhaps Ariana was trying to keep them from gaining unhealthy weight by putting her tongue on them.
