14 DAY TRIAL // Today, November 24, the developers of the beautiful KaOS GNU/Linux distribution have had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability of new installation media for the operating system, dubbed KaOS 2015.11.
According to the release notes, KaOS 2015.11 is a feature release that includes all the latest software updates that have been pushed to the distribution's default software repositories since the October release, KaOS 2015.10, among which we can mention the latest KDE technologies, and, of course, an updated toolchain.
"KaOS is proud to present the 2015.11 ISO. The policy is, once a first pacman -Syu becomes a major update, it is time for a new ISO so new users are not faced with a difficult first update. With new builds effecting over half of the KaOS repositories (currently at about 2100), that new ISO is more than due," reads the announcement.
Looking closely at the changelog, we can notice that KaOS 2015.11 is now powered by Linux kernel 4.2.6 and features the KDE Plasma 5.4.3 desktop environment. It also boasts KDE Applications 15.08.3 software suites, KDE Frameworks 5.16.0 collection of add-ons for Qt 5.5.1 (also included), systemd 228 init system, MariaDB 10 database server, Perl 5.22.0 stack, Glib2 2.46.2 stack, Boost 1.59.0/ICU 56.1 stack, and Texlive 2015.
KaOS now has a new logo
Software updates are not the only thing implemented in KaOS 2015.11, as the developers have also managed to update the artwork, including the project's logo. Additionally, the ISO image now uses the XFS filesystem as default with the finobt and CRC technologies for enhanced error detection, and it is now possible to start the KDE Plasma 5 on Wayland session directly from the login manager.
Last but not least, systemd-boot is now the default UEFI boot manager (previously known as Gummiboot), and the latest Calamares 2.0 graphical installer has been implemented for KaOS, bringing all of its goodies.
