Could this be a sign that a dark theme is coming to iOS?

A dark iOS theme is a dream that’s yet to come true and which for some reason Apple still ignores. The WWDC keynote has brought us quite a plethora of announcements regarding iOS 12, but no word has been said on a potential dark theme.

And yet, it looks like the Cupertino-based giant is still working on some changes in this regard, as some documentation on its developer website shows that dark themes will be a thing in iOS 12.

By the looks of things, what Apple is aiming for with this is to encourage developers to create light and dark themes for their iOS 12-compatible apps. No further information was provided but insisting for a dark theme doesn’t make sense unless Apple itself might be working on something similar in this regard.

Of course, the firm has remained completely tight-lipped on any news in this regard, but the timing seems just about right for Apple to bring a dark theme in iOS 12.

All iPhones switching to OLED

A black visual style increases the efficiency of OLED displays, and with Apple migrating towards this kind of panels on future iPhones, it certainly makes sense for the company to focus more on this.

Apple currently has just a single model with OLED, namely the iPhone X, but the 2018 generation is expected to bring a second device with this display tech in the form of a Plus-sized X. A third model is likely to boast an LCD panel.

Next year, however, Apple could launch all iPhone models with OLED, so paving the way for a dark theme across the operating system and in apps could be a long-term plan.

As usual, everything can change overnight since no confirmation has been provided, so take the possibility of seeing a dark theme across the OS more prominently in iOS 12 with a pinch of salt.
