Two 5.5-inch iPhones were originally planned

If you’re an Apple enthusiast who’s keeping an eye on all reports regarding upcoming products, you certainly know that there have been rumors claiming that the company wanted to launch not two, but three iPhone models this year in September.

Leaks that have reached the web in the last few months have also brought forward this idea, suggesting that, in addition to the standard 4.7-inch and the Plus models, Apple also planned to unveil an iPhone 7 Pro coming with a Smart Connector and other exclusive features.

And it turns out that these reports aren’t entirely inaccurate, if we are to trust some sources cited by Japanese publication Nikkei in a story published today. Basically, here’s what the new report claims.

First of all, Apple indeed originally planned to launch three iPhone models, as it follows: the standard model with a 4.7-inch screen, as well as two versions with 5.5-inch displays. These two were supposed to be called Plus and Pro, featuring just one major difference: the camera.

iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 Pro

The iPhone 7 Plus was projected to come with the exact same camera as the 4.7-inch sibling - word is that the new iPhone will boast an improved single-lens camera, and otherwise be similar in specs. This is an approach that Apple is currently using for the 6s generation, as both the standard model and the Plus have the same features, with a few exceptions (such as OIS on the Plus’ camera).

The iPhone 7 Pro, on the other hand, was designed to sport a dual-camera system that would provide better photos, but no Smart Connector or other features suggested by recent leaks. The exact same features and dimensions of the Plus were supposed to make their way on the Pro too.

Apple, however, decided to give up on the iPhone 7 Plus and launch the iPhone 7 Pro as “Plus,” so the September lineup will be similar to the 6s. The difference is that the Plus, since it’s actually the original Pro, will feature a dual-camera system, while the standard model will come with a single-lens but improved camera.

Of course, take this report with a little bit of skepticism because, as you can see, anything can change overnight, so we’ll find out more about the new iPhone, including its name, next month.
