Apple is announcing that the coming Apple TV device is designed to support video games and is showing a number of the titles that will be offered to the user community as soon as the platform is introduced.

The most recent event from the company had managers show off devices like the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, a new version of the Apple Watch, and improved iPad models.

But for gamers, the Apple TV might be the bigger long-term revolution because it allows them to play some major titles on a big screen, which were previously offered only on mobile devices.

The company briefly showed the coming hardware playing experiences like Hipster Whale, Shadowmatic, Guitar Hero.

In a bid to expand its audience in the gaming space, Apple is also announcing that Crossy Road will be offered for Apple TV, alongside Disney Infinity 3.0 from Activision, and a new title called Beat Sports from Harmonix, which combines the hitting of balls with the hitting of notes.

Gamers can also save their progress on any device and then continue playing on the Apple TV.

It's expected that more information about the range of supported video games will be offered before the official launch date, which is set for October.

The Apple TV will probably have a smaller impact than the coming Steam Machines

The new platform looks impressive, with a touch screen that can be used as a controller, with integrated tracking from a range of gestures, but it's pretty obvious from Apple's presentation that the focus will be on television programs rather than on video games.

It's unclear whether users will be able to stream action from their smartphones to the device, and from there to other services, like Twitch or YouTube.

Presumably, the general impact of Apple TV on the gaming world will be limited unless some major titles deliver specific versions for it, lower than that of the coming Steam Machines.

Rumors have existed for a long time that the company is looking to enter the gaming industry and disrupt it, but so far the focus seems to be on smartphones, tablets and the newly announced watch and stylus.
