Bigger iPhones already in the works for next-year’s gen

While the iPhone 8 is just around the corner, it turns out that Apple is already working on the 2018 iPhone generation, with a report revealing the company is preparing a few major surprises for its customers.

The next-year iPhone lineup will include two new models featuring bigger displays, according to a report from ET News, measuring 5.85 and 6.45 inches, respectively.

It appears Apple originally planned to introduce a 5.28-inch model, but given the quick transition to bigger screens, the company abandoned the idea and decided to go for a 5.85-inch panel for the smaller model.

But even though Apple wants the iPhones to ship with bigger displays, this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be larger overall. Instead, the 5.85-inch iPhone is very likely to be similar in size to the iPhone 8 model projected to launch next month, while the 6.46-inch version would be just a little bit bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (which itself features a 6.3-inch screen).

3 iPhones in 2018

The trick here is that Apple would eliminate bezels completely, thus reducing the overall dimensions of the phone, and this is what it’s going to happen with the iPhone 8 as well.

Leaks have shown the iPhone 8 launching in September will have almost the same dimensions as the current iPhone 7, all thanks to the removal of the Home button and the bezels, with Apple managing to substantially increase screen space without altering phone size.

This is a strategy that Samsung has already used on the Galaxy S and Note lineups, and which Apple will naturally embrace as well for its future models. The OLED panels to be used on the iPhone 8 will be manufactured by Samsung, and the partnership will continue next year for the iPhone 9 when the South Koreans will also be in charge of building part of the displays.

The 2018 iPhone lineup will thus include 3 different models, namely the two mentioned above and the anniversary iPhone 8 launching next month.
