Apple will take the wraps off the iPhone 7 later today

Apple has taken its online store down ahead of the public launch of the iPhone 7 happening later today and likely to bring us not only the new phone model but also the second-generation Apple Watch, and possibly upgraded models of the first generation.

The Apple Store goes down every time before a big unveiling in what has become Cupertino’s preferred way of showing us that something exciting is on its way, so it’s not caused by an error or hack, but only by Apple’s intention to fuel the craze that’s going on right now online around its new iPhone.

“We’ve got something special in store for you. And we can’t wait for you to see it. Please check back soon,” the message posted in the store reads.

And while this message is certainly exciting for Apple fanboys, it’s worth knowing that this doesn’t necessarily mean that sales of the iPhone 7 will begin later today. The device is very likely to show up in the store this week, with pre-orders to start tomorrow, while the first shipments will take place next week.

People familiar with Apple’s plans previously said that shipments could begin on September 16, but all details will be unveiled by the company itself later today, during the press conference.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone 7 will come in the same two versions as its predecessor, namely the standard 4.7-inch and the Plus models, and it will feature small visual changes, such as antenna lines placed at the top and the bottom edges, new cameras, no headphone jack, and new colors.

In terms of hardware, the iPhone 7 will include upgraded processors, up to 3GB of RAM on the Plus model, dual-camera system on the larger model, and an improved 12-megapixel unit on the 4.7-inch version, bigger batteries, and improved waterproofing, as Apple wanted to bring the iPhone in line with the Apple Watch.

Full details will be unveiled by the company at the event later today, and we’ll be covering the conference live, so stay tuned for all information here on Softpedia.
