Anniversary iPhone model to launch this fall

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed after the company’s FY17 Q3 earnings reports that total sales of the iPhone since the debut in 2007 surpassed 1.2 billion units the latest quarter, after previously reaching 1 billion units in July 2016.

Cook revealed that in Q3 alone, the company sold 41 million iPhones, with 2016 figures reaching approximately 200 million – this is just a guess though, as Apple no longer provides yearly sales data for its products.

“iPhone results were impressive, with especially strong demand at the high end of our lineup. iPhone 7 was our most popular iPhone and sales of iPhone 7 Plus were up dramatically compared to 6s Plus in the June quarter last year. The combined iPhone 7 and 7 Plus family was up strong double digits year over year,” Tim Cook explained in the earnings call with analysts.

“One decade after the initial iPhone launch we have now surpassed 1.2 billion cumulative iPhones sold,” he continued.

The anniversary iPhone

And since Apple celebrates 10 years since the launch of the first iPhone, the company wants to do it with a special model that would be unveiled in September.

The anniversary model is likely to be called iPhone X or iPhone Edition, but is often referred to in the press as iPhone 8, probably as a result of rumors that Apple is looking into a distinct name to differentiate this special-edition device from the upgraded iPhone 7 generation to launch as iPhone 7s and 7s Plus.

The anniversary iPhone will come with a series of major upgrades, including an OLED display, no bezels, wireless charging, fast charging, and facial recognition, with the company currently pondering the complete removal of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

There are signs that the new iPhone could be delayed, so even though it might make it to the company’s September event, sales are expected to start later this year, possibly in October or November.
