Apple’s Mac OS X and iOS, the operating systems installed on iPad and iPhone, are the products with the biggest number of vulnerabilities found in 2015, according to a new report.

CVE Details, a website that tracks the security vulnerabilities found in software across the world, put the two on the first two spots in a chart of the last year, with OS X being impacted by 384 holes while iOS becoming the runner-up with 375.

As we’ve already told you, the biggest surprise is that Adobe’s Flash Player is no longer the leading software solution, but it’s not far either. Flash Player is now third with 314 security vulnerabilities found in 2015.

Interestingly, Microsoft’s Windows operating system, which was often referred to as the most-attacked desktop platform out there, is nowhere to be seen in the top 10 (in fact, Windows Server 2008 got on the 10th place with 155 vulnerabilities), but that doesn’t mean that the Redmond-based giant is missing from the chart.

Windows 10, the secure operating system

Microsoft is actually the leading vendor in terms of the number of vulnerabilities found in its products, with a total of 1,561. Adobe is second with 1,504, followed by Apple with 1,147.

Out of the Windows versions, 8.1 had 151 vulnerabilities last year, followed by Windows 7 and 8 with 147 and 146, respectively. Windows 10 is far behind on position 35 with just 53 security flaws. Internet Explorer continues to be the most vulnerable browser on the market with 231 holes.

Certainly, Microsoft has improved the security of its products a lot, and the company only tops the vendor chart because of the fact that it has so many software products on the market at the same time. Generally, several Windows versions are affected by the same vulnerability, and this is one of the reasons the number could go so high.

On the other hand, seeing Apple at the top of the chart is certainly surprising, given the fact that the Cupertino-based firm is heavily focused on the security of its products. Interestingly, while iOS had 375 vulnerabilities last year, Android was affected by only 130 bugs.
