14 DAY TRIAL // Apple has updated their support article regarding the Meltdown and Spectre security vulnerabilities, saying that the Apple Watch is unaffected by both exploits.
After the unearthing of the Meltdown and Spectre hardware bugs earlier this week, which put billions of devices at risk of attacks, Apple confirmed recently that all iPhone models and some Macs and Apple TV devices are affected by both vulnerabilities, which could allow attackers to steal your sensitive data.
Apple released mitigations for Meltdown in December last year with the iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 updates, but didn't tell anyone due to the embargo between all the major tech companies that worked hard during the past two months to release updates that patch what it would appear to be the worse chip flaws ever discovered.
Apple Watch and watchOS are unaffected by both Meltdown and Spectre
The good news for Apple Watch users is that the little computers on their wrists are immune to both Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, according to Apple, which says that "Apple Watch is unaffected by both Meltdown and Spectre." Apple also noted that Apple Watch's watchOS operating system is not affected either.
"Apple Watch is not affected by either Meltdown or Spectre," says Apple in the support article. While explaining how the Meltdown and Spectre security exploits affect iOS, macOS, and tvOS devices, the company said that "watchOS did not require mitigation" for Meltdown, and "watchOS is unaffected by Spectre."
Of course, this comes as very good news for a lot of Apple Watch users out there as the tiny device on their wrists could someday save their lives. We hope to see more and more such devices immune to these devastating hardware bugs, such as the small Raspberry Pi computer.
