New information points to different name for the next iPhone

We’ve known for a while that the next-generation iPhone is projected to launch in September, and pretty much everyone has referred to it as “iPhone 7.”

And since Apple has already debuted both the iPhone 6 and the 6s series of models, it kind of makes sense for this year’s version to be called iPhone 7, but it turns out that Cupertino has a completely different plan.

As we told you before, this year’s model is very unlikely to be called iPhone 7, and according to more recent information, the company wants to go for the iPhone 6 SE moniker that would bring its new device in line with the iPhone SE introduced earlier this year.

Such a name is a viable option for two different reasons, and we’ll detail both of them in the paragraphs below, but keep in mind, however, that this new moniker isn’t yet confirmed.

New model every three years

First and foremost, the next iPhone won’t bring such big changes in terms of looks and features as compared to the existing iPhone 6s lineup, although certain upgrades, such as the dual cameras on the Plus, are indeed expected. But as far as the design is concerned, the next iPhone will feature a look that’s nearly identical to the one of the existing models, with minor changes here and there that include the antenna lines placed at the top and the bottom of the phone.

And second of all, Apple is believed to be switching to a three-year new model release schedule that would bring us completely overhauled iPhones every three years. This means that the models launched in between would be very similar to their predecessors, and they would all be part of the same series, hence the resemblance in their naming.

The iPhone SE would thus be the third model launched after the standard iPhone 6 and the 6s, so the iPhone 7 would only see daylight next year, followed by the 7s and 7 SE if Apple maintains the same strategy. For the moment, however, we have to wait a little bit longer until mid-September, when Apple will officially take the wraps off the new model and confirm its name and features.
