14 DAY TRIAL // Apple announced iOS 10 at WWDC 2016 a few hours ago and released the first developer preview builds shortly after that, while also planning to roll out a public beta sometime next month.
iOS 10 does come with a huge number of improvements, but it also makes a change that’s very likely to impact many users who are holding back the upgrade to a newer version of the iPhone.
iOS 10 will no longer work on the iPhone 4 and 4s, so in order to install it, you need at least an iPhone 5 or a newer device. What’s more, the chances are that some features or the overall performance won’t be the best on an iPhone 5, but at least the update will be offered OTA and in iTunes on this old model.
But as far as the iPhone 4 is concerned, this change pretty much marks the end of the device’s lifetime, as it’s been around since mid-2010.
Outdated specs
The iPhone 4 came with a 3.5-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 640x960 pixels, between 8 GB and 32 GB of storage space, 512 MB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel camera. It launched with iOS 4, so it’s very clear that it can no longer smoothly run an iOS version released six generations later.
And yet, the iPhone 4 marked an important milestone in the history of the iPhone, as it was the first model to launch with an all-glass body and a metallic frame, an approach that Apple is believed to be considering once again for a future version.
Rumor has it that the 2017 iPhone, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the device, could come with an all-glass body as well, but Apple could go for a more dramatic overhaul, with an all-screen front fascia incorporating all parts, such as the Touch ID sensor and the FaceTime camera.
