New invert colors option brings a nearly perfect dark mode

Dark themes are the new thing and they're almost everywhere you look, including on desktops where even Microsoft admitted they're awesome and brought them in Windows 10.

But as far as Apple is concerned, seeing the company aligning to the global trend is a thing that’s not happening too often, so even if iPhone users were drooling over a dark theme, Cupertino left all of them in desire.

And yet, it looks like the recently-announced iOS 11 brings us closer to a dark theme, as the company has introduced a new option that turns menus and apps all black.

How to enable the "dark theme"

Specifically, Apple is offering a new invert colors option in iOS 11 that's very similar to the dark theme that everyone wanted on their iPhones. Previous versions of iOS already come with an invert color setting, but turning it on leads to warp colors that make everything look weird across the operating system.

That's changing with the new so-called Smart invert, whose purpose seems to be making an iPhone all black. This time, menus not only that look black but the operating system also preserves the look of certain colors, such as green and red, so the UI seems to look correctly despite the inverted colors.

What's more, it turns out that apps are also using this new dark theme, and it makes sense since the inverted color mode applies at operating system level. The App Store, which you can see below, uses the dark theme as well, and with few exceptions, everything seems to be rendered correctly.

It goes without saying that this isn't a dark theme per se, but only a small tweak that gets us one step closer to such a visual style, which Apple could at some point improve to make it work flawlessly.

To enable the new option, go to Settings > General> Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Invert Colors and enable the option called Smart Mode. The Classic option provides the same results as on older versions of iOS, so stick with the first one to see how the whole thing looks in full black.
