Apple is expected to make major design changes to its iPhone 8 or X, the phone that will mark the ten-year anniversary since the first iPhone was launched. A report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that Apple might go so far as to ditch the home button.

The analyst believes that the 2017 iPhone will have a 5.8-inch OLED display with 5.15 inches of usable screen space, and some of it will be reserved to virtual capacitive buttons, according to the report. This would mean that Apple plans to remove the home button completely, thus reducing the bezel size on the new phone.

The Touch ID fingerprint recognition technology embedded in the home button will also be ditched. There are many rumors that say Apple will employ a new technology that places the fingerprint sensor into the display.

The iPhone 8 will have the same display size as the 5.5-inch iPhone

The analyst also says that Apple’s iPhone 8 with OLED display will be similar in measurements to the 4.7-inch iPhone. This will reportedly be possible by eliminating the home button, usually placed on the front panel.

The actual display will be similar in size to the 5.5-inch iPhone, but come in a 4.7-inch body. The analyst is confident that Apple will also launch a standard 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch LED iPhone, but it remains to be seen what features they will hold.

Previous reports stated that the iPhone 8 would come with a glass body and wireless charging, while the two other iPhones to be launched this year wouldn’t employ major improvements. Aside from the new fingerprint scanning technology, the iPhone 8 might also come with an iris scanner and facial recognition.

Apple is also rumored to incorporate a stacked logic board design in the iPhone 8, one that would support a longer battery life and a bigger battery with a size comparable to the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus. Rumors say that the price of the new iPhone 8 might surpass $1,000.
