Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone this year, one that will mark the 10-year anniversary since the first iPhone was launched. Rumors say that Apple will make major changes to the iPhone 8 design, but a new report suggests that it will also pay homage to the first iPhone.

Industry analysts have spoken to Korean site ETNews and revealed that the new iPhone will use a “water drop design” that’s similar to the original iPhone. This means that the phone will have a rear curve which is smoother and rounder than current metal case edges.

Apple will reportedly use a three-dimensional glass material on the back panel of the iPhone 8 to resemble the deeper curves on the original iPhone. But one difference between the two phones will be the fact that the iPhone 8 will feature a larger display of 5.8 inches. iPhone 8 will also be thinner than the 11.6mm original iPhone.

Display with slightly curved edges, similar to iPhone 7

The 3D glass case on the new iPhone is said to be rounded at the top, bottom, left and right edges, compared to the rather flat and less curved design that was introduced with the iPhone 4. Apple’s iPhone 8 is expected to feature an all glass design, as opposed to the plastic and aluminum materials used in the original iPhone.

The report also mentions that the iPhone 8 won’t have very obvious curved edges on the side, like the Samsung Galaxy S line, despite the fact that OLED displays are quite flexible and suitable for such design elements.

There have been many rumors about the iPhone 8 display and whether or not it will feature a curved design, but the most probable assumption is that the upcoming device will feature the 2.5D design with a similar curve as the existing iPhone 7. The screen is also said to be edge-to-edge with no side bezels and with virtual capacitive buttons after the home button is ditched. Reports also point to a plenitude of AR features arriving on the next iPhone. Nothing is certain until the phone is revealed, so take the information with a grain of salt.
