And users won’t be allowed to disable it, report speculates

Apple is now giving the finishing touches to the iMac Pro, and while the company hasn’t released full details just yet, new information keeps landing thanks to people who’re constantly digging deep into firmware files.

It happened several times in the case of the iPhone, and now it happens again ahead of the iMac Pro debut, with the folks over at Pike’s Universum discovering some pretty interesting tidbits about the new device.

As it turns out, Apple might be adding a feature described as “advanced threat protection,” which is more of a new version of the popular Find My iPhone, but developed for the iMac Pro.

Phone call support on the iMac Pro?

At this point, most of the details seem to be pretty sketchy, but the cited site says users might not be allowed to turn this off, meaning that it can phone home to the user and report the GPS location no matter what.

This could be the ultimate theft protection an Apple device could get, and at one point, it was even rumored to land on the iPhone with the help of new tech described in several patents and presumably supposed to make Apple’s smartphone impossible to steal.

At the same time, there’s a chance this feature is in some way linked to phone call support, meaning the iPad Pro could integrate a SIM card to enable making and receiving calls.

While this could be a nice addition to the feature arsenal of the iMac, it actually made me wonder if it’s really that easy to steal an iMac without being spotted by anyone given the size and weight of the device. Such a feature certainly makes sense on the iPhone, but Apple might think that people spending around $15,000 on the iMac Pro need to protect their investment, and Find My iMac would be a neat way to do that.

It goes without saying that a healthy dose of skepticism is required for this report, but we’ll find out more about the new iMac Pro when it launches next month.
