Apple is busy working on its anniversary iPhone 8, set to release in September, alongside the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. A new report by Nikkei Asian Review quotes sources saying that Apple placed an order for 70 million OLED panels from Samsung.

Apple won’t release order details for various iPhone components, but reports from a few months ago stated that the Cupertino company placed an order for 100 million 5.5-inch AMOLED panels from Samsung for its 2017 iPhone. Other reports claimed that the two companies reached a $4.3 billion agreement for an additional 60 million OLED panels, thus revealing Apple’s optimism when it comes to the upcoming iPhone 8.

The latest report claims that Apple is looking to receive 70 million OLED panels for this year’s iPhone, while research company IHS Markit’s senior director David Hsieh believes that Samsung is preparing to produce many more OLED panels than Apple initially ordered. Samsung intends to develop 95 million OLED units in 2017, in case demand exceeds expectations.

3D sensor and wireless charging on the upcoming iPhone 8

Apple is betting big on iPhone sales during the holiday season, seeing how the company sold a record 78.3 million iPhones during last year’s holidays. The iPhone 8 has all the advantages to become a favorite among customers this year, considering that it will be the first iPhone to feature a 5.2-inch OLED display. The other two upcoming phones, iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, will have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD screens.

Moreover, the iPhone 8 could have a slightly curved display at the edges. OLED screens are flexible enough to offer smartphone makers more leeway when it comes to the design of upcoming products. The source also confirms previous reports of a 3D sensor for facial recognition and enhanced biometric features, most likely on the iPhone 8.

Furthermore, the iPhone 8 will ditch the home button and feature wireless charging technology, but Apple is still working on perfecting the technology and removing any overheating issues. Apple’s upcoming iPhones are expected to arrive this September.
