After announcing the release of the iOS 9.1 software update for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, Apple began rolling out the first point release of the Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan computer operating system.

Mac OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan had been in development before Apple released the final build of the OS X 10.11 El Capitan computer operating system to users worldwide on September 30, 2015. It included four Beta releases that both Public Beta testers and Apple developers enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program could test.

While not an impressive maintenance release, Mac OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan improves the Microsoft Office 2016 compatibility, makes the OS X installer more reliable, especially when upgrading to the 10.11 El Capitan release, updates the VoiceOver feature to be more reliable, and introduces over 150 new emoji characters.

The same emoji characters were also introduced in the iOS 9.1 mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, and were designed to support both Unicode 7.0 and Unicode 8.0 encodings. Moreover, Mac OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan updates multiple Audio Unit plugins to work as expected.

The Mail app received some under-the-hood improvements

In addition to the changes mentioned above, the first point release of the OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan computer operating system adds much-needed improvements to the Mail app. For example, Apple managed to patch an issue with the information displayed in email messages about outgoing servers, which apparently was missing.

Lastly, they also managed to fix a critical problem in Mail that affected the display of mailboxes and emails in the application. Mac OS X 10.11.1 is a recommended update for all users of the OS X 10.11 El Capitan operating system. To update, open the Mac App Store application, go to the Updates tab, and install OS X El Capitan Update 10.11.1.
