Apple has just taken the wraps off the new iPhone X, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the iPhone with a long list of new features. iPhone X will set the path for technology for the next decade, Apple says.

Pronounced “iPhone ten,” the iPhone X is all screen with an edge-to-edge screen, with glass front and back and the same materials as on the iPhone 8. It’s water and dust resistant and comes in two finishes, space gray and silver.

iPhone X has a Super Retina display, as Apple calls it, which has a diagonal of 5.8 inches with 2436x1125 pixels resolution and 458 ppi. The iPhone X is the first iPhone to come with OLED, which Apple says overcomes issues like brightness that impacted traditional displays with such tech. It uses True Tone display and 3D Touch.

Tapping the screen just wakes up the iPhone, as a Home button is no longer available. Apple has implemented new gestures, such as swiping up from the bottom to go to the home screen. Multitasking is available by swiping up and pausing for a second to see app thumbnails. Siri can be invoked by pressing the side button, which is also larger.

Enter Face ID

Unlocking the phone will work with facial recognition, which Apple calls Face ID. The feature uses cameras integrated into the sensor bar at the top of the screen. Face ID works even in the dark and creates a 3D model of your face to protect the device.

Apple says Face ID can’t be tricked with photos, so it’s super-secure. The processing is performed on the device, so nothing is stored on other servers. As compared to rumors, the feature requires user attention, so if the eyes are closed or looking elsewhere, the device won’t unlock. Rumor had it that the iPhone 8 could unlock even when the phone is sitting on a desk.

The chances for someone to look at your iPhone X and unlock it is 1 in a million, Apple says emphasizing that Face ID is even more secure than FaceTime.

The same cameras that are used for Face ID power a different system called Animoji, which are animated emoji that you can control with your face and generated by scanning your face. iMessage will support these new emoji and third-party app developers are likely to integrate them as well.

The camera on the iPhone X is a dual-lens system just like on the iPhone 8 Plus with 12 megapixel resolution and a telephoto lens. Dual optical image stabilization is offered, with better low-light zoom. A quad-LED True Tone flash is also offered. There is zero shutter lag, Apple says.

Power comes from the A11 Bionic chip, and the iPhone X features the same hardware performance as the iPhone 8. The iPhone X lasts 2 hours more than iPhone 7, as Apple says it has increased battery.

Wireless charging is also support thanks to the glass body, and fast charging is available as well.

Apple has also announced a new mat which works with all new-generation Apple devices for quick charging, with the iPhone X, the Apple Watch, and the AirPods all supported. This is just a sneak peak for now and Apple says it will be launched at a later date as AirPower.

iPhone X, which Apple says is the future of the smartphone, will be offered with 64GB and 256GB storage, and will be priced from $999. Pre-orders start on October 27 and the device will ship on November 3, which pretty much confirms that Apple has indeed experienced production issues.
