Apple has once again lost the top sales place in the United States, as Samsung’s Galaxy S8 sold very well in the three months ending May 2017, helping the South Korean firm overtake its rival.

Samsung’s market share improved from 32.9 percent in the previous 3-month period to 36.2 percent, and while this is an important growth, it’s actually 1.1 percent below the sales share the company reached in the first period the year before.

Apple, on the other hand, is currently at 34 percent, up no less than 4.7 percent versus 2016, especially thanks to strong sales of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple’s latest-generation iPhone takes the first two top spots in terms of best-selling device, followed by Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8.

The Cupertino-based iPhone maker continues to struggle in China, where it’s currently at 19.2 percent, down 0.4 percent from the previous year and up 16.2 percent from the 3 months ending April. Huawei is currently number one in China with 28.3 percent, followed by Xiaomi.

“Xiaomi managed to regain some momentum with the Note 4X launch, but the brand is making slow progress with its higher-tier devices,” said Tamsin Timpson, Strategic Insight Director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Asia. “Xiaomi’s average selling price in the three months ending in May was 41% below the market ASP at ¥1523, and 33% below Huawei’s Honor Brand.”

Huawei leading in EU5 Android sales

In the EU5 region, Android is currently the number one operating system with no less than 79.5 percent sales share, up 2.8 percent from the same period the previous year. iOS, on the other hand, increased 0.2 percent to reach 18.4 percent, while Windows Phone dropped 2.8 percent to 1.8 percent.

“The largest contributor to Android’s EU5 growth came from Huawei, which posted strong sales in all EU5 markets except Spain. Huawei continued to produce good sales volumes, but its flagship P10 struggled to make an impact in sales rankings, with share gains attributed to the older, more value-orientated P8 and P9 Lite models,” said Dominic Sunnebo, Global Business Unit Director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Apple is expected to continue growing in the coming months, especially because new iPhones are just around the corner, though the eagerly anticipated iPhone is more likely to suffer a delay and land in October or November.
