Apple is known to be working on an exciting anniversary smartphone, one that’s rumored to ditch the Touch ID and feature a dual-camera setup in the front. The iPhone 8 is expected to be announced in September, together with the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, but its release could be delayed.

A report from Bloomberg corroborates previous rumors about the iPhone 8 and reveals that Apple is testing a prototype with a dual-camera setup in the front. The source adds that the Apple is using camera components from Sony and has explored adding augmented reality-based features, as well as depth-of-field enhancements to the camera system. In addition, the iPhone 8 could come with face-recognition features.

Apple is said to have already finalized the design of the upcoming iPhone 8, which will feature a flat OLED display that will still have slight curves towards the stainless steel chassis. The physical home button on the iPhone 8 will be replaced by a virtual Function Area that will offer the same features.

Apple faces issues with Touch ID technology

A vertical dual-camera setup will be featured on the back of the smartphone, which could also house the Touch ID sensor. Apple is said to have experienced issues with integrating the Touch ID sensor beneath the display and analysts say that if the Cupertino-based company runs out of time, it will ditch the sensor completely. Others claim that Apple could adopt the same strategy as Samsung and integrate the fingerprint sensor on the back panel.

Aside from design changes, the iPhone 8 will also have powerful internals and be powered by the latest Apple A11 chipset built on the 10nm process, while running the latest iOS 11. Bloomberg expects the iPhone 8 to be announced in September, while the smartphone could very well hit shelves one or two months later than expected. Previous reports say that Apple could release a limited supply of iPhone 8 units at first, while a larger stock will hit the market later.
