New Envy laptops from HP going after Apple and Microsoft

As one of the top Microsoft partners, HP can’t stay out of the Windows 10 device market, so today the company announced a refresh of the Envy laptop series that brings it closer to Apple’s own MacBooks and even to Microsoft’s recently-launched Surface Laptop.

In addition to the new Spectre x2 launched this week, HP also took the wraps off new Envy 13 and Envy 17 laptops, both of which come with premium features and hardware.

First of all, in terms of design, HP decided to stick with metal, and thanks to narrower bezels, the laptop is smaller than the previous model (approximately 0.8 inches / 20 mm narrower and 0.4 inches / 10 mm shorter). This is living proof that HP was focused specifically on the design of the laptop, as it wanted its laptop to be just as exquisite as the models launched by Apple and Microsoft.

Technical specifications

As far as hardware goes, both models are impressive. The HP Envy 13 features a 13-inch full HD display and is powered by Intel Core i5 processors (Kaby Lake) paired with 8GB RAM. By default, the laptop comes with 128GB storage and features a battery unit that should provide up to 14 hours of battery life - of course, these are the official figures on paper, but in reality, you should get a bit less than that.

The HP Envy 13 features a built-in fingerprint scanner on the trackpad and offers connectivity options that Microsoft didn’t think were necessary, such as two USB-C ports.

On the other hand, the HP Envy 17 is more of a productivity monster, coming with a 17-inch display and Intel Core i7 chips, again from the Kaby Lake series. Additionally, buyers get 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and dedicated Nvidia GeForce GRX 940MX GPU.

In terms of prices, the HP Envy 17 laptop is already up for grabs in the United States starting at $999.99, while the Envy 13 will go on sale next month starting at $1,049.99.
