Swollen batteries trigger global 13-inch MacBook Pro recall

The battery nightmare continues for Apple, and after the company admitted it slowed down iPhones with degraded batteries on purpose, it now launches a recall for 13-inch MacBook Pro due to swollen units.

The firm says in an advisory published on its website (and which you should read in order to determine if your MacBook Pro is part of the recall or not), that some units, or “a limited number” as Apple claims, shipped with a faulty battery that tends to inflate.

While the batteries do not catch fire, therefore not posing a safety risk for users, Apple says it’s important to have the battery serviced as part of the program. Everything is completely free and the recall does not affect 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar or older 13-inch models.

“Apple has determined that, in a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units, a component may fail causing the built-in battery to expand. This is not a safety issue and Apple will replace eligible batteries, free of charge. Affected units were manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017 and eligibility is determined by the product serial number,” Apple says.

Refunds offered for previous battery repairs

If you want to check if a certain 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar is included in the recall, you can follow the link above and input the serial number for more information.

Apple notes that this battery servicing won’t extend warranty coverage of the impacted devices, and the company says that customers who have already replaced their swollen batteries with a new one before the recall can reach out to ask for a refund.

It should take between 3 and 5 days to have the battery replacement complete, and in addition to Apple Stores, you can also get in touch with authorized service providers or simply mail devices to the Apple Repair Center.
