Huawei typically doesn’t miss any opportunity to express its ambitious plans of competing against Apple with more innovative tech and devices, and as it turns out, the company could use Cupertino’s own feature arsenal to achieve this goal.

References discovered in firmware files by XDA reveals that Huawei’s next flagship, likely to be called P11 and possibly codenamed Emily, could come with a notch a la iPhone X in an attempt to offer similar features such as Animoji.

Recent demos showed that Huawei has already developed an Animoji-like feature that’s much more advanced than Apple, the company claims, as it can also detect the tongue and reproduce the face gesture with an animated character accordingly. Facial recognition could thus be offered as well, and the notch discovered in the firmware files could play a key role.

Huawei’s iPhone X clone to see daylight in February?

Just like on the iPhone X, the notch could be implemented to be the home of certain sensors and cameras, though evidence in this regard is not available just yet.

XDA says the firmware indicates the upcoming device will have a 6.01-inch Samsung LCD display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels, while the boot animation points to a resolution of 2244x1080 pixels. The difference is most likely made by the notch, as it does eat up some space in certain parts of the operating system.

Huawei’s new P11 could see daylight in early 2018 at the Mobile World Congress, and this seems to be the right timing for the company to take the wraps off another device to compete against Apple’s iPhone X.

Samsung too is expected to unveil the Galaxy S9 in the first quarter of the next year, with some sources claiming a preview of the device could be offered as soon as January at CES. The company, however, claimed this is highly unlikely, suggesting that instead a March unveiling is still on the table, with sales to begin in April.
