A new report reveals that Apple is the most popular OEM among US smartphone subscribers, but iOS came second behind Android when it comes to the top smartphone platform. The report reveals data gathered for the three-month period ending in January 2017.

Apple’s iPhone took the top spot during the holidays, as the company managed to take over 44.6% of the US smartphone market, up 2.3% from the average market share in the three months ending October 2016. When it comes to global smartphone profits, Apple grabbed 79%, while Samsung 14.6%.

Samsung saw its market share drop from 30% to 28% in the three months ending in January. Apple now has a 16.6% lead over Samsung. This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering last year’s Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, which made some customers lose their trust in Samsung products.

LG lands on the third spot with 10.3% market share

The third smartphone company in the US is LG, with a 10.3% market share, which results in an increase of 0.7% from the 9.6% share in the three months ending in October. Motorola and HTC land on the fourth and fifth place with 4.3% and 2.3%, respectively.

The situation is quite different when it comes to mobile operating systems. Unsurprisingly, Android leads the way with 53.2%, but records a drop of 2% compared to the period ending in October. iOS increased 2.3% to 44.6%, which means that it needs another 8.6% to reach the same position as Android. BlackBerry stands on the fifth position with 0.6% of the US market during the three-month period that ended in January.

The smartphone market could record an interesting evolution this year, especially in the US. Samsung is expected to launch its first flagship smartphone after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, while Apple intends to astonish the market with an anniversary iPhone Edition, rumored to sport 3D sensing camera, a complete redesign, and powerful new features.
