A headset for Augmented and Virtual Reality from Apple might be a thing two years from now, as recent reports claim the company started working on a powerful AR/VR wireless headset for release in 2020.

According to CNET, Apple is working on a powerful wireless headset that would support both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, have an 8K display higher resolution for each eye, use a wireless technology, as well as its own processor to process VR and AR images.

The headset would apparently come with a dedicated box to which would connect using short-range and high-speed wireless technology called 60GHz WiGig. Apple's high-end VR/AR headset might also support upcoming 802.11ay wireless technology that would boost both the speed and the action range of the device.

Besides the incredible 8K display resolution for each eye, which would make AR/VR images look lifelike, the best thing about Apple's rumored AR/VR headset would be the fact that it won't feature any wires at all, said people familiar with the company's plans. This would separate it from the rest of today's VR and AR headsets.

Untethered from an iPhone or Mac

Another selling point of Apple's rumored wireless headset for virtual and augmented reality would be the fact that it won't be dependent on an iPhone or Mac. According to CNET, Apple's AR/VR headset would be untethered from a smartphone or computer, or a tablet for that matter.

According to the person familiar with Apple's plans, the project is internally codenamed T288, it's currently in early stages of development and planned for a worldwide release as early as 2020, which we think would be a little too late for Apple to try to conquer the virtual and augmented reality market.

As we saw in the past year or so, Apple has a major interest in augmented reality, which it advanced in recent iOS software updates for the iPhone and iPad offering us new AR experiences that would allegedly help us be more productive and do things that in normal situations we wouldn't try.
