Apple considered an iPhone powered by Windows

UPDATE, April 2: This was obviously an April Fools' Day prank! Thanks to everyone who tried to decipher the message. For anyone wondering, the text in the photos reads "April Fools' Day 2018."

Windows 10 Mobile is pretty much dead, and while Microsoft has already pushed the platform to maintenance mode, it looks like somebody else thinks Windows phones deserve a second chance.

And the company that could keep Windows 10 Mobile alive for a little longer is none other than Microsoft’s long-time rival Apple.

A recent leak shows what appears to be an iPhone prototype running Windows 10 Mobile, though right now, it’s not known if the company is still working on this project or not. Sources with knowledge of the matter said that Apple considered launching an iPhone with Windows 10 Mobile following the security issues that iOS experienced lately – for instance, a $15,000 box can breach into any iPhone and crack the passcode with what’s believed to be an unpatched vulnerability in iOS.

While Apple has pledged to improve iOS and pay more attention to fixing security issues and improving performance, it looks like the company has been exploring other options as well, including a possible switch to Windows 10 Mobile.

Custom Windows 10 Mobile version

Judging from these leaks, Apple installed a slightly modified version of Windows 10 Mobile on an iPhone prototype, though further tweaks are very likely should the device advance towards the mass-production stage.

The device in question seems to be an older iPhone 6s Plus, which could be an indication that the project itself isn’t entirely new. Sources, however, indicate that Apple might be considering installing Windows 10 Mobile on a second-generation iPhone SE, which might not feature the latest hardware, but instead an older CPU. This could be a reason Apple installed Microsoft’s OS on an iPhone 6s Plus, though this is just pure speculation on our side for now.

Windows 10 Mobile on an iPhone could help keep Microsoft’s mobile operating system alive, and there’s a chance that the two companies might work together for extended support, should this project come to fruition.

As with every leak, take this with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially because Apple is known as a company that remains completely tight-lipped on everything until official product launches.
