The new Apple iPhone will bring some design changes to the lineup, with the inclusion of an OLED display and Touch ID placed directly below the screen, according to a new report by Economic Daily News, via Digitimes.

The report mentions that the iPhone 8 will use an optical fingerprint sensor which will unlock the smartphone when the user places a finger on the OLED display. The Touch ID will scan the fingerprint and automatically grant access to the phone, if it matches the previously set print.

The new optical fingerprint scanner will replace the Touch ID technology embedded in physical home buttons on previous iPhone models. As far as we can gather, the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus won’t come with the new technology, as the handsets will continue to make use of the physical home button.

The report states that this is not a rumor, and the information was gathered from credible sources. It seems that Apple’s chip supplier TSMC disclosed some iPhone 8 features during a symposium in Taipei. Some reports from the past few days did reveal that Apple’s iPhone 8 could face late shipments, specifically because of the new Touch ID technology.

Furthermore, the display resolution on the new phone will progress from 16:9 on last year’s models to 18.5:9, similar to what we’ve seen on the Galaxy S8. The iPhone 8 will also have “invisible” infrared sensors for enhanced camera features and augmented reality.

A recently leaked image revealed how the OLED iPhone sizes up against last year’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The picture retrieved by Mac Otakara showed an iPhone 8 case hinting at a slightly larger smartphone than the 4.7-inch iPhone 7, but smaller than the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.

The iPhone 8 is expected to feature a 5.8-inch display and the home button’s removal will allow Apple to develop a flagship with a reasonable overall size. The dual-camera setup is visible on the back and its vertical position will allow augmented reality features on the new phone. Wireless charging is expected on all three iPhone models, said to arrive in September.
