Leak suggests Apple planning major upgrade for front camera

Apple’s HomePod firmware that got leaked not a long time ago keeps providing us with hints of features that might end up being offered on the iPhone 8, and now Portuguese site iHelp has discovered another line of code pointing to more camera upgrades.

It appears that Apple aims to upgrade the iPhone to 4K video recording at 60 FPS, and while this is an upgrade that many people saw coming on the rear coming, there’s something a bit more surprising.

The same improved 4K support could be offered on the front-facing camera as well, so on the iPhone 8, both cameras could offer the highest video resolution currently on smartphones.

At this point, the iPhone 7 series do offer 4K support, but videos are limited to 30 FPS and only work with the rear camera. The front-facing camera only offers 1080p resolution on the iPhone 7.

Just don’t hold your breath

What’s very important to know is that just because the code is there, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Apple is ready to offer a specific feature on the next iPhone model.

Without a doubt, Apple has at least considered aligning the features of its two cameras, and while it could make sense for the iPhone 8 to boast 4K video support at 60 FPS on both cameras given that it’s an anniversary model, Cupertino could decide to hold it back for a future model.

iPhone 8 is already projected to come with a plethora of features, and every single upgrade increases the possibility of something going wrong, a thing that Apple doesn’t really afford given the fierce competition coming from Samsung and, more recently, Huawei.

Among other things, the iPhone 8 will be the first iPhone to come with wireless and fast charging, two features have been available on Android devices, like Samsung’s, for a long time.
