iFixIt teardown reveals more about the iPhone 7 Plus

A recent video that reached the web only a couple of days ago indicated that, instead of offering a bigger battery, Apple actually reduced it on the iPhone 7 Plus for reasons that didn’t make sense to anyone.

But according to a teardown made by iFixIt, this is not at all the case, as the iPhone 7 Plus ships with a 2,900 mAh battery, as some leaks swirling around the web a couple of months ago indicated.

Furthermore, the iPhone 7 Plus comes with 3 GB of RAM, a welcome upgrade given the fact that it also features a dual-camera system and more power is needed to process photos, so it’s very clear that Apple spent a considerable amount of time on choosing the best hardware configuration for the phone.

On the other hand, it’s still surprising that the iPhone 7 Plus still has a smaller battery than the iPhone 6 Plus, which shipped with a 2,915 mAh unit, but it’s most likely because of the software optimizations that the company introduced with iOS 10 and the more power-efficient A10 chips.

Increased focus on waterproofing

iFixIt notes that the screen now opens to the side after removing the adhesive strip and the Pentalobes and adds that the amount of glue the firm used on the device shows a particular focus on waterproofing.

“The 7 Plus bizarrely opens to the side, despite the familiar clips at the top of the phone that help align the display as in previous models. Opening the 7 Plus reveals lots of black and white gooey adhesives running along the perimeter of the phone. Our bet is that this penguin-themed stickiness is part of Apple's efforts to add water resistance. Then again, Apple's engineers might just really love glue,” they say.

You can check out the gallery below to see the teardown of the iPhone 7 Plus, but fortunately, we can now rest assured because Apple hasn’t actually reduced battery capacity on this model. It didn’t make any sense, especially given the more powerful hardware, but it still remains to be seen how this configuration performs in real life.
