Apple already investigating the explosion

An iPhone 6 Plus owned by a woman living in Fresno, California, exploded in the middle of the night while charging, causing damages to the objects and furniture in its proximity.

Yvette Estrada explained in an interview for ABC that her iPhone was charging on the dresser and then all of a sudden it emitted a flash, followed by flames and smoke.

“I heard a sizzling, then we heard the pop and the whole fire was coming out of the screen,” she said, explaining that her husband woke up and quickly threw it in the sink to put water on it.

Apple already offered an iPhone 6 Plus in return

The woman called 911, but by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the phone was already melted in the sink. The explosion caused damages to the surrounding objects, which included a pair of glasses, two Apple Watch stands, and the furniture.

“What if this would have been underneath my pillow or if I was on the phone? My face would be burned. Hopefully they can fix this and they can compensate my new phone or do something for me because they have to do right,” Estrada said.

Apple is already investigating the explosion, and in the meantime, the company has offered the woman a new stand for her Apple Watch, a charger, and an iPhone 6 Plus. Estrada said that Apple told her that if she wanted an iPhone 7, she had to pay for an upgrade.

As for the causes of the explosion, nothing is known at this point, and a faulty battery cannot be blamed just yet. The iPhone 6 Plus was the model that suffered from bendgate, as the device bent under strong pressure, causing internal damage to various components, including the screen and potentially the battery.

If this is the case, then the iPhone 6 Plus wasn’t equipped with a defective battery, and probably caught fire after getting bent. Without a doubt, the investigation will determine the exact causes of the explosion, as the firefighters only explained that the phone “was faulty.”
