14 DAY TRIAL // Brianna Olivas has recently shared a video of her iPhone 7 Plus on Twitter, explaining that the smartphone suddenly began smoking and sizzling, before her boyfriend threw it in the restroom. As it turns out, the troubles started one day before when the phone wouldn’t turn on.
Olivas had bought the phone from Sprint in January, and one day before the incident, she took it to an Apple Store where employees ran a diagnostics test. The test didn’t find any problems with the phone and gave it back to her.
The next morning, Brianna was sleeping with her phone charging next to her head, when her boyfriend took it and placed it on the dresser, not before he unplugged the charger. He then went to the restroom and with the corner of his eye he saw that the phone started emitting smoke.
At this point, he tossed it in the bathroom where the device exploded. Brianna posted a video of the incident on Twitter, showing how smoke was pouring from one side of the device while the case started melting.
Apple has already replaced the phone and is investigating the incident
The exact cause of the phone catching fire is unknown, but the smoking is indicative of a battery failure in which vaporized electrolyte material is emitted. Brianna mentioned that she always used original Apple chargers with her iPhone 7 Plus.
Apple has already replaced her phone and received the damaged iPhone 7 Plus, but has yet to say what actually went wrong. The company only stated, “We are in touch with the customer and looking into it.”
The incident is certainly unfortunate, but it’s not the only iPhone to explode, an iPhone 6 Plus recently caught fire on the nightstand, while the owner was sleeping. Fortunately, the phone didn’t injure the owner, but damaged the nightstand and left black soot marks.
