If you’ve always wanted to know how come the iPhone is capable of shooting high-quality photos even though on paper it doesn’t seem to have the best camera on the market, we’ve got some pretty good news for you.

Apple Senior Director of Camera Hardware Graham Townsend has discussed the iPhone camera in the latest edition of CBS’ 60 Minutes show, revealing that the latest models of the device, namely the 6s and the 6s Plus, come with no more, no less than two hundred individual parts.

A team of 800 engineers worked to create the camera that’s available on your iPhone right now, he says, while a different group was developing the adjacent software tools that optimize and improve the quality of the photos and videos.

While demonstrating the optical image stabilization system, Townsend has revealed that every iPhone performs more than 24 billion operations when taking a single shot, so imagine how fast Apple actually managed to make the device that you don’t even notice when this is all happening.

Head of hardware Dan Riccio has also detailed the work the company is putting into every single product, explaining that not only iPhones but also MacBooks are built to look and work flawlessly.

“Every tenth of a millimeter in our products is sacred,” Riccio stresses. “With this design, it involved mechanical designers, toolmakers, chemists, and it also brought software engineers that could design a pack that would fit within the surfaces of the product but still work reliably.”

The iPhone 6s Plus camera

The new iPhone 6s Plus comes with an important camera upgrade over its predecessor and features a 12-megapixel unit (instead of an 8MP one). Additionally, it has 1/3” sensor size, 4K video support, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash, face recognition, and HDR.

The device also comes with a 5-megapixel front camera for selfies and FaceTime, which also features face detection, HDR, and panorama support. It can record in 1080p at 30 FPS.
