MacOS reference found in new Apple documents

Apple seems to be getting ready for an important product renaming, as the company could pick a different moniker for its desktop operating system.

Documents related to Apple’s plans for Earth Day 2016 contain references for a product called MacOS, which is believed to be none other than Mac OS X with a new name that could bring the desktop OS in line with other products currently in the company’s portfolio.

“Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices,” an excerpt from these documents reads.

As you can see, calling Mac OS X just “MacOS” makes more sense because the same naming scheme would be used for all operating systems in Apple’s lineup, as OS X is currently the only one not using the OS tag in its name. WatchOS, iOS, and tvOS are all based on this strategy already, so expect OS X to follow the same path very soon.

The fight for more consistency in Apple’s lineup

While nobody can tell for sure when this change could take place, everyone expects more info to be shared at WWDC in June, when Apple will share more information on its plans for its platforms. And even so, as 9to5mac notes, Apple is expected to bring at least one more version of the operating system under the OS X moniker, as the developer beta of OS X 10.11.5 is already up for grabs.

Apple’s aiming for similar consistency in the iPhone lineup too, with people close to the matter suggesting that, in the next couple of years, the company could also launch an iPhone Pro that could bring the phone portfolio in line with the tablet one.

Such rumors have never been confirmed, but leaks allegedly showing unreleased versions of iPhone seem to point to a Pro model that could either join in the Plus version or replace it altogether.
