Chinese source says new device coming at WWDC

Rumors that Apple could launch a new iPhone SE this year aren’t really new, but a new report coming from Chinese media indicates that the device might actually feature a 4.2-inch screen, and not measure 4.0 inches as initially believed.

While this is highly unlikely, especially due to all the work that a new screen size would require both in terms of hardware and software, QQ claims Apple is getting ready to unveil this new device at this year’s WWDC developer conference in the summer.

Again, this is less probable given the timing of WWDC. Apple, typically unveils small product refreshes, as WWDC generally takes places too close to the new iPhone launch in September. This year, WWDC is expected to happen in early June, though the dates haven’t yet been announced.

No Face ID on the new iPhone SE?

The same source claims the new iPhone SE would feature new hardware to bring the device in line with the other latest-generation iPhones, including an A10 processor and 2GB RAM.

Apple could also offer two different storage versions, namely 32GB and 128GB, and keep Touch ID instead of making the switch to Face ID, which debuted on the iPhone X and is expected to be expanded to the entire lineup of iPhones in 2018.

Earlier reports from more reliable sources indicated that an iPhone SE2 would come with only subtle changes in terms of hardware, and that Apple wouldn’t even offer wireless charging or facial recognition. This is basically a cost-cutting measure that could help the new iPhone be more affordable.

The 2018 iPhone lineup expected to see daylight in the fall could also come with a cheaper version that would sport a 6.1-inch LCD display, again without key features like 3D Touch, but instead boasting Face ID facial recognition. The other two models could be an upgrade to the iPhone X and a Plus-sized version, both of them equipped with OLED panels.
