“I won’t buy it on day one,” he says in interview

The iPhone X is pretty much the biggest overhaul of Apple’s flagship product in history, so you’d normally expect former and current company executives to buy it as soon as it goes on sale.

But as far as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is concerned, the iPhone 8 is a much better choice, revealing in an interview with CNBC that he won’t be buying the anniversary model on day 1.

“I'd rather wait and watch that one. I'm happy with my iPhone 8 — which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me. For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn't — on day one — upgrade to. But my wife will, so I'll be close enough to see it,” he said.

Facial recognition still a mystery

While buying an iPhone X on day one is going to be quite a challenge for most customers, especially given the super-limited supply that everyone seems to be pointing to, Wozniak pointed out that facial recognition is one of the reasons why not rushing to buy the device as soon as it launches is a good idea.

Woz said he is “skeptical” about Face ID, adding that he’s not sure facial recognition would work just like Apple wants it to, and this could lead to several problems for the device itself.

Facial recognition replaces Touch ID on the iPhone X after Apple failed to integrate the fingerprint sensor into the screen. As part of its efforts to launch the iPhone X with a bezel-less display, the company eventually decided to abandon the fingerprint reader entirely and instead go for facial recognition.

Exclusively available on the iPhone X, the feature is called Face ID and it could make its way to the entire iPhone lineup as soon as the next year. For the time being, however, the performance of facial recognition is still a mystery, so it remains to be seen how the first buyers find this new feature.
