Is this color shift, image retention, or a hardware problem?

The iPhone X is the first iPhone finally making the switch from LCD or OLED panels, and naturally, it comes with both the pros and the cons of this kind of display.

But since for Apple customers this is kind of a new technology, there’s a thin line because what’s normal to experience on an OLED display and what is not, with the Cupertino-based tech giant itself rolling out an FAQ article to explain that some of the behavior is absolutely normal and doesn’t represent a hardware issue whatsoever.

And yet, it’s still unclear for a significant number of customers whether their iPhone X units are defective or not, and some are currently complaining about what appears to be a display issue that causes uneven color from one edge to another.

While Apple itself could call this color shift or image retention, which are both effects happening on OLED displays, it appears that not all the iPhone X units that were included in the first batch shipped to customers on November 3 experience the same behavior.

Apple Store already contacted

On the other hand, several reddit users have already confirmed the same display effect on their own iPhone X units, explaining that it all becomes more noticeable in a dark room with the brightness set to lowest level.

At first glance, this doesn’t seem to be a problem related to the angle you’re looking at the display, and one of the photos (which you can view in the photo gallery below) shows the unusual effect no matter the field of view.

While contacting Apple for more information is what each customer should do, the company itself should also provide more detailed documentation on the behavior that iPhone X buyers could experience with the OLED display, especially because the existing information seems to only cause more confusion that could, in the end, affect device sales.

The redditor says he has already contacted the Apple Store to find out more information, and some official information in this regard would certainly help.
