Gartner research puts Apple head of all its rival

Apple is the world’s number one company when it comes to revenue generated by IT divisions, according to an analysis made by Gartner, with rivals Samsung, Google, and Microsoft pretty far in the charts.

Specifically, Apple got the leading spot with $218.1 billion, while Samsung is only the runner-up with $139.1 billion. Google and Microsoft are next but very far behind with $90.1 and $85.7 billion, respectively. IBM is fifth with $77.8 billion.

But out of the five the companies, only Google managed to increase its IT revenue from 2015, statistics show, with Apple actually dropping from $235 billion and Microsoft decreasing from $88.1 billion. Google, on the other hand, recorded revenue of $74.9 billion the previous year.

Microsoft still relying the most on software

A chart comparing the IT markets that these five companies rely the most on shows that software is still the number one cash cow for Microsoft, despite the firm investing in other markets like hardware. Mobile phones and PCs are generating only a small part of Microsoft’s revenue, while IT services and Internet-based IT products and services are also essential part of the business.

As far as Apple goes, the company’s top market is the mobile phone business, followed by tablets, where devices like iPhones and iPads are still very successful. The wearable market is also generating important revenue for Apple, with the Apple Watch becoming the best-selling smartwatch across the world.

In the case of Samsung, mobile phones are once again the most popular products, but tablets, assembled components (which are also sold to a wide variety of companies, including Apple) and semiconductors account for a big part of the total revenues.

And last but not least, Google continues to rely the most on Internet-based services and it’s not difficult to see why since its search engine continues to be number one across the world. The smartphone business is generating an insignificant part of the company’s revenue.
