Dual-camera setup coming to the Galaxy S9 as well

You can put this into the “thank you, Captain Obvious” section, but here’s a new investor note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that confirms Samsung is going all-in on dual-camera phones.

According to the latest forecast published by Kuo, Samsung will launch the Galaxy S9 with a dual-camera setup as well, most likely in the spring of 2018.

It goes without saying that this is something that simply makes sense, especially because the Galaxy Note 8 itself also comes with dual cameras, but this new forecast finally confirms what we’ve heard lately and indicating that Samsung will only go with dual-lens tech for its flagships.

No fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen just yet

What’s (probably) more interesting is that Kuo doesn’t expect Samsung to give up on the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor before the debut of the Galaxy Note 9, which as per the company’s release schedule should take place in approximately 12 months.

In other words, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will come with the same fingerprint sensor as the existing models, while for the next phablet, the company could finally launch a model with the sensor embedded into the screen.

The analyst reveals that Samsung is currently working with Himax and Egis to develop the embedded fingerprint scanner, as the phone maker needs more time to get the technology right after several failed to attempts to bring it to mass production.

Apple itself had a hard time developing a fingerprint sensor embedded into the display and by the looks of things, it failed to do it as well, which means the upcoming iPhone 8 is unlikely to feature this technology as well. Instead, the iPhone 8 will bet big on facial recognition, despite some rumors indicating that Apple could place fingerprint sensor on the back.

The next iPhone will launch in just a few weeks and we’ll learn more about how Apple managed to deal with the Touch ID tech at that point.
