Yet another big company switches from PC to Mac

This fall slowly turns out to be quite a fiasco for Microsoft, as several large companies have decided to abandon Windows PCs or phones and switch to those manufactured by its rivals, in some cases Apple.

After Delta and GE, it’s now Walmart’s turn to do the same thing, as the firm will deploy a total of 100,000 Apple Macs within the company in 2018.

Walmart’s Technical Expert Miles Leacy explained recently that the main reason for switching from PC to Mac entirely is the reduced support costs that Apple’s devices come with, revealing that it’s estimated Windows PCs experience no less than 60 percent of all support issues that are being reported.

In the case of Macs, this figure drops to 40 percent, and Leacy says this helps generate Everyday Low Cost, which is the term the company uses for reduced IT costs and total cost of ownership savings.

A decision that just makes sense

Walmart is already using 7,000 Macs across the organization and Leacy claims that Apple’s Macs could at some point even be offered as the default choice for new employees, which should contribute to a complete demise of Windows PCs within the company.

As the cited source notes, Walmart switching to Macs isn’t entirely surprising, as the firm has long been a close partner with Apple. Walmart currently sells iPhones, iPods, and iPads, and it explored adding support for Apple Pay in its own QR code payment app.

On the other hand, having such a large company making the move to Apple devices is quite a big loss for Microsoft, though this time the decision has little to do with Microsoft’s products.

Walmart hasn’t provided any other details on its planned rollout of Macs within the company, but said that it aims to complete it next year. The firm is currently in the process of researching a choice program and promises to share more information should it make the Mac a default choice for new employees.
