Apple's A9 comes second in both CPU, GPU rankings

There's been a lot of debate surrounding Qualcomm's latest smartphone chipsets that the US company launched in the last couple of years.

After launching a chipset plagued by overheating issues last year (Snapdragon 810), Qualcomm is back in full force with what could be the most powerful CPU and GPU available on the market, Snapdragon 820 and Adreno 530.

AnTuTu, one of the most popular benchmarks used for testing smartphones and tablets, has just released the top 10 rankings for CPUs and GPUs.

According to the listing, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor is the fastest processor on the market, having scored 136383 points. Apple's A9 CPU came in second with 132657 points, followed by Samsung's new Exynos 8890 with 129865 points.

Samsung Exynos 8890 is the big loser

Although both Exynos 8890 and Snapdragon 820 chipsets are manufactured using the 14nm processor, it looks like Qualcomm's CPU is much faster, even though it only packs four cores over Samsung's eight cores chipset.

The rest of the listing contains chipsets that were launched last year, so it would make sense to remain far behind the new batch of CPUs launched this year.

Huawei Kirin 950 and Samsung Exynos 7420 are placed in the fourth and fifth place while Qualcomm 810 and 652 follow not far behind.

When it comes to GPU power, Qualcomm's Adreno 530 graphics processing unit is by far the most powerful on the market with 55098 points scored in AnTuTu benchmark.

Apple's A9 GPU follows far behind with 39104 points, whereas Mali-T880 MP12 that comes inside the Exynos 8890 chipset is third with 37545 points.

Although it might not be surprising that Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset tops both rankings, it's quite unusual for Samsung's Exynos 8890 chipset not to be able to score more than Apple's A9 in both CPU and GPU benchmarks.
