Microsoft compiles a new RS3 build ahead of insider release

Windows 10 Creators Update (Redstone 2) is expected to launch early next month, so in addition to getting this release ready for retail users, Microsoft is also working on preparing the very first Redstone 3 builds for members of the Windows Insider program.

Today, a new Windows 10 Redstone 3 build showed up on BuildFeed, confirming that work on the next major update for Windows 10 after the Creators Update advances.

Although this happens at a rather slow pace, it’s worth noting that only part of the Windows development team is assigned to RS3 builds at this point, and work on this version would become the main focus after the Creators Update goes live next month.

Windows 10 build 15163 is the second Redstone 3 build spotted online, after the first one showed up in February. Of course, it’s still part of the rs_prerelease branch and it’s only internally available.

Redstone 3 launching in the fall

Microsoft is expected to ship the first Redstone 3 builds to Windows insiders in the Fast ring shortly after the debut of the Creators Update on April 11, but just like it happened when the Anniversary Update launched last summer, no big changes are expected at first.

This is the reason builds RS3 are not yet a priority at the company and they are compiled at a slow pace, but once full development starts, more substantial updates would be shipped to users as well.

The Redstone 3 update is projected to launch in the fall, and previous reports indicated the target was October for RTM compiling date, while the release would take place in November.

If this is the case, Microsoft might be aiming for version 1711 with Redstone 3, which is a direct reference to the release date, with the first two digits representing the year and the other two the month, in this case, November 2017.

Of course, this is just in the rumor stage for now, and it’s too early to discuss the RS3 release date, but with the Creators Update just around the corner, this project is slowly becoming a priority for Microsoft.
