The Anonymous hacker collective has launched #OpIcarus, an operation aimed at the world banking sector, and the first target in their sights was the Bank of Greece, which at the time of writing is under heavy DDoS attack.

Anonymous had previous attempts at attacking the banking sector. Back in October last year, the group launched Operation Black October, urging users to use Bitcoin and withdraw all the money from their bank accounts.

OpIcarus itself is in its second stage, with the group having attempted another series of DDoS attacks under the same tag in 2014. This time around, the hackers seem more determined and have prepared a list of targets they want their minions to attack.

Hacker group releases lists of targets

The list is split into four sections. One details websites belonging to the US Federal Reserve Bank, the second lists IMF (International Monetary Fund) targets, the third lists sites owned by the World Bank, and the fourth is a list of 158 national banks. In this last list, we find banks from all over the world, even under-developed countries, not just world powers.

The first bank to get hit by DDoS attacks was the Bank of Greece. The first wave of attacks came yesterday, and according to bank representatives, it never lasted more than a few minutes. We can confirm this information since we kept an eye on the bank's website as well.

Things changed today, when the Bank of Greece saw a new series of attacks, and its website is down for at least six hours at the time of writing.

Nevertheless, the group has bigger fish to fry and has said so in a video that you can view below, as well as in a series of statements uploaded online.

"We must strike at the heart of their empire by once again throw a wrench into the machine, but this time we face a much bigger target - the global financial system. This time our target is the New York Stock Exchange, and Bank of England," the Anonymous hackers said.
